Wreaths, making a scented base
These bases make wonderful beginnings to a wreath that will be hung in your kitchen or given as a gift.
For alternative scent combinations, refer to our Pot Pourri article. Here you will find suggestions that will include
other herbs and spices. By following the method described below, you can have scented base for any occasion
and for any room.
Basic materials needed to make any type of scented base include
- Reinforced styrofoam base (size of your choice)
- Paint brush (1/2" to 1" width)
- Tacky glue
- Cooling rack
- Cookie sheet
Spice Base
Mix spices together well and set aside.
- Ground cinnamon
- Ground cloves
- Ground nutmeg
- Ground oris root
Place cooling rack on cookie sheet.
Using the cooling rack as a stand, place the base on the rack. Paint glue evenly, onto the top and sides
of the base in two to three inch sections. Sprinkle a generous amount of the spice mixture on the
painted area. Any excess will be caught in the pan underneath to use if needed. Continue painting and
sprinkling until the top and sides are covered with spice. Let completely dry for 24 hours. If the air is
humid or it's a rainy day, it may take longer to be completely dry. Spicing the back of the base is not necessary.
Once dry, hold the base upside down and gently tap to remove any excess spices. The base is now ready for
you to add other items to complete a wreath.
Herb Base
Mix flowers and herbs together well and set aside.
- Lavender flowers
- Crushed rose petals
- Crushed rosemary
- Ground oris root
Place cooling rack on cookie sheet.
Using the cooling rack as a stand, place the base on the rack. Paint glue evenly and thickly, onto the top and sides
of the base in two to three inch sections. Sprinkle a generous amount of the herb mixture on the painted area and pat in place.
Ensure all areas of glue are covered. Any excess herbs will be caught in the pan underneath to use if needed. Continue painting and
patting until the top and sides are covered with the mixture. Let completely dry for 24 hours. If the air is
humid or it's a rainy day, it may take longer to be completely dry. The back need not be coverd with the herbs.
Once dry, hold the base upside down and gently tap to remove any excess herbs. The base is now ready for
you to add other items to complete a wreath or centerpiece.
SUGGESTIONS: If you chose a small base with a three inch middle opening or less, you may wish to leave
your scented base as is. Use for a table decoration with a candle place in the middle. Larger openings will
accomodate two or three candles to make a nice centerpiece. Be sure to use an unscented candle or ones
that will match with the scents of your base.
NOTE: Tacky glue will dry quite quickly, therefore working in small areas is suggested.
NOTE: Any spices/herbs that fall through to the catch pan can be saved for future projects providing there are
no glue lumps in it. You can let these extra spices sit for 24 hours to ensure any glue mixed
in drys hard. Pour though a seive which will catch the lumps and store the spices/herbs in a sealed
glass jar.
