Baking Day

When you have planned a baking day, plan to make your recipes by cooking those with the lowest temperature first. You then increase the oven heat as needed rather than having to wait for it to cool off so you can bake the next treat.

Baking Powder Test

If you are not sure if the baking powder is still good place a teaspoon full into hot water. If it fizzes, it's still good.
**Bonus** Works for baking soda as well.

OIL MEASURER
Purchase a liquid soap dispenser from the bathroom department at a local store. Fill it with cooking oil. Check to see how many squirts it takes to fill a tablespoon measure. From then on no more too much oil glurging out of the bottle - just "squirt" the right amount!

BIG MOUTHED FUNNEL
Cut the top four inches, or so, off the top of a dish soap squirt bottle. Wash out until squeaky clean. This makes a good wide mouth funnel for filling mustard squeeze bottles and catsup bottles.

SPICE GRINDER
Purchase a new coffee grinder and mark it "SPICES". It can be used to grind most spices, however, a few like cinnamon bark and nutmeg must be broken up a little first. After each use clean it out so there is no residue left inside. The easiest way to do this is to grind a little dry pasta or rice and then brush the powder out.

Scented Drawer Liners

Buy the cheapest role of wallpaper you can find. The cheaper the better as it is more absorbent. Calculate how much paper you will need for all the drawers you want to insert liners into. Unroll the wallpaper to the total length needed. Scatter "dry pot-pourri" or a
"sachet" mixture thickly on the paper and roll it up again. Place in a heavy plastic bag and leave for six weeks. This should be long enough for the scent to be absorbed into the paper. Cut to the lengths you need to use for drawer liners.

NOTE: Often stores selling wall coverings will have discard bins
